Tiffany was born to Agnes Dee, who was single at the time. Tiffany never knew her biological father. Agnes Dee was something of a free spirit or hippie and made a living as a massage therapist, herbalist and midwife; she never had much money and felt guilty that she couldn't provide her daughter with the best food, clothes, toys, etc. Tiffany, however, never noticed. In fact she enjoyed her life. Then, her mother met Gordon Melody - an administrator at a local real estate firm. The two fell in love and married after three months. While not rich, Gordon was well-off, so the two were able to purchase a nice house in a quiet suburb and Agnes was able to focus more on parenting. This was also the time Tiffany started high school.

Edgar Chen was born near Norwick and has lived there most of his life. His father is an orthodontic surgeon and his mother works part time as a librarian and writer. His family is fairly well-off (not rich, but definitely upper-middle class) so Edgar has had most of his needs met throughout his life. His parents are busy and as long as his grades are good and he stays out of trouble give him a fair amount of freedom; he rarely, if ever, abuses this trust. He's on his school's tennis team and is a skilled fencer. He met Tiffany when they were freshmen in Biology and are friends. He's also on good terms with Henry Olson, Franklin Schlutz and Dianna Rosenstein.

Henry Olson is a somewhat stereotypical overweight comic and computer geek. He's a bit on the arrogant side and something of a know-it-all. To be fair, he is knowledgeable about a vast number of topics, ranging from history to chemistry to professional wrestling. Whenever he can't answer a question he gets flustered, apologizes and will immediately focus all his energies on learning the answer. He can also be something of a bully but if confronted with an actual threat he will quickly shy away. Henry is friends with Edgar; they met early on in English and found they share a lot of geeky interests. They hang out a lot after school with Beatrice, Franklin and sometimes Dianna Rosenstein. The rest of the group mostly tolerates him but Edgar genuinely likes Henry despite his flaws.

Franklin is a bit on the quiet side. He's something of an athlete, not a jock, though he does have sort of a thuggish appearance (he's not a bully). He likes the outdoors, camping, and particularly likes going out on rivers and lakes. He's not terribly friendly but likes 'hanging out' and doesn't like being alone for too long. He comes out of his shell when playing team sports, however. Henry is friends with Edgar. Both of them are on the tennis team. He isn't too fond of Edgar's other friends (particularly Henry) but still hangs out with them. His dad works as a head mechanic at a local car shop and his mother is a stay-at-home mom. He has two younger brothers.

Beatrice Hanson

Beatrice is a very kind, sweet hearted and gregarious girl. Unfortunately, she's also a bit shy and doesn't like being the center of attention. When speaking to a large group of people she often gets flustered. She's also a bit eccentric and asks bizarre questions that pop into her head at times. Beatrice is friends with Dianna Rosenstein. She knows Edgar and Henry through Dianna (and Franklin to a lesser extent). She doesn't want to seem weird and desperately wants to fit in with them. She doesn't have any other friends and her parents are distant/busy with their own affairs. Her mother is a physician at the hospital and her father is a stay-at-home dad who works part time as an editor and writer for a food magazine.

Dianna is friendly, talkative, smart, but a bit petty and overly concerned with appearances (physical and social). She likes being the center of attention (unlike Beatrice, which is probably why they get along so much; Dianna pulls all the attention away from Beatrice yet Beatrice can still be around people). She's a bit flirty and likes to tease. Dianna isn't exactly one of the 'popular girls' but she's only one level below them. She met Edgar when they were in Junior High school and the two have been friends since. She's a bit attracted to Franklin but he has not returned her advances. Edgar secretly has a crush on her but he's never had the guts to express his feelings for her. Dianna considers herself the de facto leader of the group of friends (they don't think of her like that, however, though they often go along with her ideas - with the exception of Tiffany).
